This world is for women: Status update of a shopping mall

“Do you like shopping?”
It is thought that the answer depends on the gender of the person who was posed with this question. This is one of the oldest type of stereotype that exists till today. The planet and closet are the two places that are ever evolving. For many the changes in the closet are the high priority thing that cannot be neglected while for others it’s mere necessity. Have you ever thought who fills the closet of a bachelor? How is he aware about the latest trends that are replacing the older ones?
Shopping is no more a domain dominated by women. We live in a modern world where men like to shop for themselves as they are getting influenced greatly by the fashion industry and advertising. The only difference that prevails is that men’s and women’s minds start functioning differently when it comes to shopping.
Men like to shop alone, they aren’t price conscious, and much interested in getting in and out of the trial room and cares the least about the color of the cloth that they are buying. They also prefer to browse online and compare products online. Is this the reason why shopping malls are labelled as world for women?
The urban millennial are social savants, value hunter, thrill seeker, experimental and savvy shoppers. They don’t like to walk down the aisles and look for things that they might like or might have seen an athlete, an artist, a musician or their favourite celebrity wearing. But we still love to crack jokes on women’s insatiable craving for shoes, the endless appetite for handbags and new fashion.
Psychologist says that, the reason behind why a woman loves to explore the rocks traces back to early human history, the ear which was called hunter-gatherers period. Here women were the gatherer and men used to hunt for food and carry the prey back to their homes as soon as possible. This logic is now applied to shopping. Bullshit! The real reason is that women are the caregivers of the family. They not only take care of their children, but are also responsible for the elderly. Therefore, people tend to see them more, buying stuff on behalf of the other they are accountable for.
Another trend that has emerged in the past decade that has gained momentum with time is the game of stereotyping. The love of the human race to categorize and put someone in a box has birth to an illogical assumption that is, men who enjoy shopping and are interested in the process are labelled as gay or feminist. Nobody realizes that there are no laws which state that you have to be a woman to enjoy shopping.
The fashion industry has also started understanding that this is no more a women centric playground. Influences from different walks of life have started talking about fashion and places where they love to shop from in media, blogs and magazines. Marketers and shopkeepers have started capitalizing on this aspect.
Shopping is way farther than a penis and cleavage thing. It’s more about expressing yourself, acting upon your desires, telling the world that you are comfortable in your skin and have enough confidence to walk down the aisle and grab whatever suits you the best.
